Underfloor Spray Foam Insulation in Northeastern Pennsylvania
Cold floors, drafts, and sagging fiberglass beneath the house can point to an ineffective thermal boundary between your living space and the crawl space below. Attis Insulation installs closed-cell spray foam on the underside of suitable residential floor assemblies in Wayne, Pike, and Monroe counties and surrounding northeastern Pennsylvania communities.
We assess the crawl-space conditions, existing insulation, exposed framing, moisture, piping, ductwork and access before recommending whether to insulate the floor or enclose the crawl space at its perimeter. The owner is directly involved in the estimating process, and each project receives a clearly defined scope.
When underfloor spray foam is a good fit
- Cold floors above vented or otherwise unconditioned crawl spaces
- Missing, loose or deteriorated fiberglass beneath first-floor framing
- Uninsulated floors above additions, enclosed porches and exposed areas
- Accessible floor cavities with irregular framing or hard-to-seal gaps
- Renovations where the underside is accessible but finished rooms should remain undisturbed
Understanding the thermal envelope beneath your home
The thermal envelope is the boundary separating heated or cooled living space from unconditioned areas. In a home with an unconditioned crawl space, that boundary can run along the underside of the first floor. Missing insulation, discontinuous air barriers and gaps around framing or penetrations can permit heat transfer and air leakage, leaving floors uncomfortable.
Closed-cell spray foam can provide insulation and air sealing at accessible floor surfaces when installed as part of a suitable assembly. Unlike loose-fitting batts, it adheres to prepared substrates and conforms to many irregularities. Rim joists, utility penetrations and other transitions still need individual attention to maintain continuity of the air-control layer.
Insulate the floor or encapsulate the crawl space?
Insulate beneath the floor
When the crawl space will remain outside the conditioned enclosure, underfloor insulation can help maintain the thermal boundary at the first floor. This may involve less preparation than a full encapsulation when the space is clean, accessible and dry enough for the work. We assess whether piping, ductwork and equipment below the new boundary could be exposed to colder conditions.
Enclose and insulate the crawl space
If the home has a damp dirt-floor crawl space, exposed mechanical systems or a broader humidity problem, it may be more appropriate to address ground moisture and place insulation at the foundation walls as part of a correctly designed, sealed crawl-space assembly. Our underfloor spray foam process
- Assessment: We evaluate access, existing fiberglass, moisture conditions, floor framing, utilities and potential air leakage.
- Preparation: We identify any removal, masking or substrate preparation required before spraying. Existing insulation removal is included only when specified in the quote.
- Installation: We apply an agreed thickness of closed-cell spray foam to suitable underside surfaces and address accessible gaps within the specified scope.
- Final review: We review the installed areas, cleanup and relevant moisture or maintenance considerations.
A frequently proposed underfloor assembly uses approximately 3 inches of closed-cell spray foam, commonly around R-21 depending on the product. The final thickness, required R-value, ignition or thermal-barrier protection and installation details depend on the building and applicable requirements. We do not treat an advertised nominal thickness as a substitute for project-specific assessment.
Important moisture and safety considerations
Underfloor foam is insulation, not a remedy for bulk water, active plumbing leaks, structural damage or chronic ground moisture. Suitable substrate conditions and manufacturer installation limits must be met. We also evaluate utilities and any combustion equipment that could be affected by the location of the air and thermal boundary.
