Insulate suitable enclosed walls with a planned retrofit
Finished walls do not always need full demolition to improve their insulation. Attis Insulation installs dense-pack fiberglass in suitable enclosed wall cavities in northeastern Pennsylvania, after evaluating access, existing materials and the condition of the assembly.
This service focuses on the installation method for enclosed cavities. For all wall options, including open renovations, see wall insulation. For an improvement plan across the home, visit existing-home insulation retrofits.
What dense-pack fiberglass means
Fiberglass designed for cavity installation is blown into an enclosed space at the density specified for the product and application. The installer must account for cavity dimensions, blocking and obstructions to achieve a consistent fill. Dense packing differs from loose-fill fiberglass spread across a vented attic floor and from batts fitted into open studs.
The insulation slows heat flow through the cavity. It does not remove thermal bridging through framing, serve as a water-management layer or replace a continuous air barrier. Accessible air leaks need a separate air-sealing plan.
When enclosed-wall installation may be appropriate
- Existing exterior walls with little or no insulation and suitable enclosed cavities.
- Rooms with uncomfortable exterior walls where cavity insulation is a confirmed gap.
- Retrofits where planned interior or exterior access is preferable to opening the entire wall.
Not every wall can be dense packed effectively. Existing insulation, short or blocked bays, irregular framing, wiring, fragile finishes and inaccessible areas can limit the work. Water intrusion, damp sheathing and deterioration must be addressed rather than concealed with new insulation.
Our dense-pack installation process
- Evaluate: Review accessible wall conditions, cavity depth, existing insulation, potential moisture concerns and practical access.
- Define the scope: Identify the proposed product and installation areas, access locations, limitations and responsibility for plugs, patches, siding or finish restoration.
- Prepare and install: Protect the work area, create agreed access and fill suitable cavities using the product-specific method and target density.
- Review: Check accessible installation areas and close access openings as specified in the estimate.
The attainable R-value depends on the product, cavity depth and installation. The wall still needs a suitable balance of water drainage, air control and drying potential. We do not assume that filling a cavity solves every comfort or moisture concern.
Dense pack, batts or spray foam?
Dense-pack fiberglass is an option for appropriate closed cavities. Fiberglass batts are fitted into accessible framing, while our closed-cell spray foam work generally requires access to the surfaces being sprayed. During an open renovation or new construction project, the available choices and installation sequence differ from an enclosed-wall retrofit.
